Grant Awarded for Wastewater Treatment Plant's Upgrade, Expansion

10/23/08 — The Town of Hillsborough was awarded a $492,000 grant from the N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund this month.

The grant is for the design and permitting of the Hillsborough Wastewater Treatment Plant’s planned upgrade and expansion. The project will enable the plant to meet tighter discharge limits and future flow projections.

The Hillsborough Utilities Department plans to request proposals from engineering firms for the design work, which should begin in early 2009. Construction is expected to start by mid-2010, with completion in 2012. The current construction estimate is $30 million but will be refined as the design phase moves forward.

The Clean Water Management Trust Fund received 196 funding requests, totaling more than $178 million, from local governments, state agencies and land trusts. It had $100 million available in grant funding this budget year.
