The Fire Marshal's Office is located at 101 East Orange Street. Parking for this office is located behind the building and is accessed from Corbin Street.
Mission Statement It is the mission of the Hillsborough Fire Marshal's Office to protect our citizens, visitors and their property from the perils of fire, explosions, unsafe construction and other hazardous conditions. Through prevention, education, and enforcement of the fire code, the Fire Marshal's office seeks to reduce or eliminate needless suffering caused by preventable acts.
It is the function of the Hillsborough Fire Marshal's Office to provide the service of public safety to the citizens of Hillsborough on several levels. By administration of the Town Codes, SARA Title III (community right to know act) and the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code. The Town Code adopted by the Town Board of Commissioners, provides local standards that the Fire Marshal enforces, such as the Control of Hazardous Materials section 12-16, the open burning regulation section 12-14 to name a few. The North Carolina State Fire Prevention Code, is the document which guides the Fire Marshal when conducting yearly fire inspections in the town limits and extraterritorial jurisdictions. The Fire Marshal's Office also conducts site and building plans review; grants Certificate of Compliance for those occupancies meeting the minimum standards in the code. The Fire Marshal has the authority to issue stop work orders and provides consultations upon request. By using these tools and procedures it is the intent of the Fire Marshal' office to provide information and give guidance in construction before, during and after occupation of the building.
Inspection Schedule
Occupancies inspected once a year: Hazardous, Institutional, High Rise, Assembly, Multi-Family Residential and Day Cares.
Occupancies inspected once every two years: Industrial and Private Educational.
Occupancies inspected once every three years: Business, Mercantile, Storage and Churches.
*Note: Public Schools are inspected twice a year.
All occupancies are subject to more frequent inspections. The above schedule is the minimum state mandated schedule. If an occupancy has a history of repeat violations or had a number of violation on its last scheduled inspection, then they will be inspected on an annually.
Citizen complaints about code violations are taken very seriously. If you see a dangerous situation you may file a complaint with the Fire Marshal's Office by calling 732-1270 ext.76. These violations might be things such as locked or blocked exits, illegal burning, over crowding in public places to name a few. You need not reveal your Identity.
